I Biked A Plenty... Again...

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

So my Miami August *Critical Mass* bike ride is complete! Again, I'm so glad I went. And I almost didn't go just cause I wasn't feeling myself, but the ride always clears my brain. And I almost didn't make it!

When I left home, I was running late. Fresh on the highway, I'm going 70mph and then *SMACK* right into standstill traffic. Turns out there was a Dolphins game at the stadium that night. Dolphins games always shut down the roads. (sigh) Always. So I get off the highway to double back around and on to another highway. Lost about 20 precious minutes.

The second highway, thank goodness, didn't have any major delays besides normal MIA traffic. But when I finally got into downtown Miami, I got lost, twice! Another 10 minutes lost. I was so afraid they would take off and I'd miss the whole thing. But alas! Despite their vehemence of leaving at "7 PM on the dot," they were late themselves. Yay! So I was able to get along... just in the nick of time!

There were about 300 cyclers this time around which is probably about a third of the cycle crowd as last time. But still quite a crowd.

***THE RIDE***

We take off and immediately there's a bit of confusion. This way, that way? I was like, "what?!?" (laughing) Critical Mass is usually so organized. But shortly we got under way we all got the rhythm again. This ride had a bit of complication, no lie. Lots of gaps in the mass, difficulty holding back traffic, some unhappy motorists and standersby and riding through some unsavory parts of town...(laughing). Everything is not perfect, right?

So the route was interesting. Projected at 11.8 miles through Downtown Miami, Allapatah, Little Haiti, Wynwood and Midtown Miami. Here are some pics...

(route pic, coming soon)

Cutie behind me. (;P)

Passed by one of the many Miami drawbridges.

Up through Allapattah. (I didn't even know we had a city called 'Allapattah' before this ride...lol)

Fellow rider on a gold chromed bike. Hot. And he had nice legs too... (:P)

Then through little Haiti.

Down through Wynwood and Midtown.

And then finally arriving at BAR, always the end point again in downtown.

The ride was about 50 minutes at 11-14 mph. Around 12 miles in total. Which was actually very short and slow for a Critical Mass ride. But, you know, every month has a different "flavor."

My cycle friend, William, so triumphant. We found each other en route. It was his first Critical Mass.

It was a great ride indeed. It's honestly just nice to get out there and be active with other people without having to spend money, or exhaust mental energy on 'how you look', you know? It's just a good ride to bring awareness to the population of the spirit of cycling. And good exercise too. End ride - 500 cals burned. Yeah!

Since it was such a short ride... William and his friend and I got together to keep riding. We rode all through downtown Miami which was bustling with night activity and added another fun time in the end. That was another good 30 minute ride, and 215 cals burned! More pics...

Bob Dylan graffiti.

Downtown Miami's Adrienne Arscht Center of Performing Arts. IE, where all the fancy people go... (ha).

Ended up at Miami's Bayside. I love this spot. Live music, food, shopping all by the port pier of the city. Beautiful view too... can you see it? It's a little blurry...

Stopped in the candy store. And NO, I didn't get any candy! (lol) I just smelled it.

Grinning away... Just had a really nice time I suppose. Plus there was a salsa band in the background (Conga Bar)... I couldn't help dancing a bit.

It was a fun night. And now I have to wait 4 more weeks for the next one... Alas.

Hope everyone is inspired to get on their bikes. And don't forget to check out your local CRITICAL MASS. I bet you'd love it.

Bless. emoticon

Thx Sandi. I'm glad you like the bike blogs... and I'm telling you... Miami has so much more that I haven't even covered... it's a great city to explore.

And THEASHINATOR - girl, every time I take out my camera I get nervous...(lol) but every biker has a trick to their camera taking. Mine is I thread the string handle through my fingers and tuck it in my gloves... then I stay on the side of the group so I can slow down and speed up to get a shot. It's not always easy (as you can see some pics are blurry)... but you get the hang of it. No fear!

Hey there, lovely Aprile! I don't know what you do for a living, but I believe you're a born photojournalist. You did one magnificent job of capturing the spirit not only of the Critical Mass race, but of the heart of Miami as well! Never had I been there, but I've come away with a real sense of the flavor of that city now, thanks to your creation here! Thank you for taking the time and trouble to bring the race right to our computers :)

Not only do you look triumphant and terrific, but you so generously brought us the gift of some gen-u-ine BEEFCAKE there! LOL!! They were handsome guys, though the fellow at the end was really endearing :) And your words matched the breathless, full-speed pace of the event you captured in pictures.

Yep, this needs to be nominated for an "I Liked This" award! :) Hugs, Sandi emoticon

This is so cool! I've never heard of Critical Mass either, but I'm definitely gonna see if there's one in Austin.

Did you take all those photos while biking? Very impressive (I'm pretty sure I'd topple just getting out my camera haha).

Oh and APATRICIAP521, and anyone else, I'm telling you, Critical Mass is awesome. Check it out. It happens monthly in cities all around the world. Every CM is set up differently so it's a little tricky to find sometimes. Best bet is to simply google the name of your closest major city with "critical mass" and search through the pages until you find the legit gathering. I lucked out because Miami's is pretty huge so it was easy to find. If you need help finding yours, just lmk! (smiling) Cheers!

Love the energy of the blog, the blog & the pics! Thank you for the inspiration! I wonder how many fellow sparkers live near you that could take advantage this mass ride? How do we motivate others that its about the mind & body & not about "how you look?" Also glad you feel refreshed & the energy of the music flows through your blog! lol

God bless & I wish you hada tried some of the candy? lol
