Greetings ! Welcome to the Sparkpage of ArchimedesII. Someone once asked me why I chose Archimedes as my Spark cyber name. Just like the great philosopher, scientist, engineer, mathematician, I do my best thinking in the bathtub too !!!

For most of my life, I've been the chubby kid in the room. I've certainly had my dietary ups and downs. Twice in my life, I've weighed over 200 pounds.

Several years ago, I fell in love with kick boxing. I loved it and I was really good at it. I was one of those fit, but fat people. I could do high kicks, push ups, etc... but, then an opportunity came up. My instructor was going away for a week and he was going to cancel class because they didn't have an instructor. I asked him if I could sub for him ? He said he'd be thrilled to have me teach since I knew all the moves.

And that's where my road to good health and fitness began. One thing I told myself was that it would probably look a lot better if the kick boxing instructor wasn't so over weight. That's when I decided it was time to modify my eating habits. I knew I ate way too much junk food and that's where I started making the first changes to my nutrition.

It took me one year to lose approximately 55 pounds by eating right (to the best of my ability) and watching my portions.

Teaching kick boxing is the tiny snowball at the top of the mountain. Since I pushed it off, so to speak, I've become a certified spinning instructor, kick boxing instructor, Powerflex instructor, etc... AND over two years ago, I became certified as a personal trainer.

Now, all of the above happened over a seven year period. But, if you had come in a way back machine and told me years ago that I'd be a fitness instructor, I'd have laughed at you. Stranger things have happened. Not bad for an old lady of 48 !

One thing I've told myself, I am NOT weighing over 200 pounds for a third time. The good news, I think I've finally learned what it takes to take the weight off and keep it off.

Moderation. Moderation. Moderation. Eat right, watch your portions and get some regular exercise that includes some strength training. It really does work.

Hey! Sent you a PM. I'm not planning on drinking a lot of alcohol. I think Mark and I may get dumped in one of the lounges while Arn and Amy go try their hand at Black Jack some night, but for the most part we will be off the ship every day except one and then back just in time to get ready for dinner. The pool closes early, which surprised me, but we'll probably spend some time there on the day we're on ship all day.

In Bar Harbor Arn and I opted to not do a shore excursion. We're hiking the Shore Line Trail instead. Halifax, sailing on a three-masted schooner and the walking around town and over to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where most of the Titanic's artifacts are. Sydney, going to the Fortress of Louisburg. This is our second time there. LOTS of walking. Arn booked an excursion on Prince Edward Island where they take you around to all these beautiful places and teach you how to use your own camera. No clue what that will entail. Quebec City we'll be walking around St. Anne de Beaupre Cathedral and grounds and around Montmorency Falls. Not a lot of walking, just sauntering. And in Montreal we're just going to wander around town with friends from Pointe-Calumet. Want to go see Notre Dame and China Town.

Breakfast will pretty much be the same everyday, and we can order fresh fruit in our room. I've packed baggies for "borrowing" a few things from the breakfast buffet if we see something we like. This is when it truly sucks being diabetic. It's way too long sometimes between meals for my sugar. Forces me out of my well-controlled eating schedule. Portion control is pretty good in the dining room. I'll stick with broth-based soups. Probably lots of chicken, and NO after dinner drinks. My one major concern is dessert. Too many carbs will put me out like a light in half an hour. Since we really enjoy the after-dinner shows, I may have to skip them altogether.

I'm worrying about it anyway, and Arn's ready to kill me. He doesn't want to hear even ONE word about "dieting" while we're gone. emoticon

    Hey There,

Thanks for the kind words, though I assure you my intellect and physique could both benefit from an upgrade! I always read your posts in a thread before posting myself (hate to admit it, but I don't always read all the others). Most of the time I don't end up posting because you've already stated the facts so clearly! I respect that a great deal.

You've made some remarkable progress. I wish you continued success!
